The researchers of the Department of Traditional Medicine (DMT) of the National Institute of Public Health Research (INRSP), are also teachers at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Sciences, Techniques and Technologies of Bamako (USTTB). The team is led by Professor Rokia Sanogo, an internationally recognized specialist in traditional medicine. The team is articulated around numerous skills:

- Chemistry of natural substances: Dr Tounkara, Dr Traoré
In Mali, nearly 80% of the population uses traditional medicine. The DMT is a WHO collaborating center. Its mission is to:
- Contribute to the improvement of the health status of the population by using local resources
- Organize traditional medicine to ensure good collaboration between traditional and conventional medicine systems.
Its specific objectives are:
- To identify traditional therapists
- To identify medicinal plants
- Establish maps of the natural settlement areas of medicinal plants
- To create a herbarium of Malian medicinal plants
- Formulate and produce improved traditional medicines
- Collaborate with traditional therapists.
