Scientific validation

Herbal medicines contribute to the health and well-being of populations, particularly in developing countries where they play an important role in the therapeutic pathway. It can be a powerful public health tool, increasing the availability of services and health coverage if properly integrated into healthcare systems.

To be effective and safe, this integration must be supported by the latest scientific evidence. Although traditional herbal medicines are based on long-standing and natural practices, they are not always risk-free. Misuse exposes consumers to potentially serious health side-effects, for example in the case of drug interactions or excessive doses. In other cases, they may simply be ineffective, but their widespread use puts pressure on local resources and ecosystems, since medicinal plants are usually harvested.

Consequently, it is necessary to guarantee the quality, safety and efficacy of plant-based products through the scientific validation of traditional knowledge and uses.

To this end, QUALITY network research groups conduct in vitro, in vivo and clinical trials to confirm the activity of selected plants and plant extracts. They are also working to identify phytochemical markers of efficacy. These results are grouped together in monographs, another of the network’s main activity, for easy access.
